A Look Back at Some Late-Blooming Wildflowers in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains

Here are some late-blooming flowers of the Gentian Family. Gentians usually have distinctive bell-shaped or tubular flowers in four or five parts. Most of the plants have leaves that grow opposite on the stem. There are 87 genera and over 1,600 species of Gentian Worldwide and 13 genera native to North America.

Cascade Mountain Wildflowers Color the Mountain Trails and Woodlands in Northern Washington State.

 In August, authors Bernie Nagy and Linda Nagy visited the Cascade Mountains in Northern Washington. They were amazed at the wildflowers still in bloom. They saw some familiar Rocky Mountain wildflowers plus many new flowers. The new discoveries only grow in the Cascade Mountains. Mountain Heather in white and pink was at subalpine elevations.   Surprisingly, white Avalanche Lilies were still blooming in late August. Rosy subalpine Spirea shrubs were covered with rounded flowerheads of tiny 5-petalled pink blossoms.     Another standout flower was the evergreen Partridge-foot. A great time to visit is during the Wildflower Festival that takes place this year from July 7-16 with additional events continuing through August. Since 1986, the town has hosted a wildflower festival. Desert wildflowers are abundant in Southern Arizona this spring. The plentiful wildflowers are the result of a mild and wet winter. Here are some wildflowers and blooming bushes that one can easily see now.     California Poppy covers whole hillsides and sometimes mixes with Lupine for brilliant color displays. Its yellow to orange cup-shaped flowers consist of 4 petals. Lupine, a member of the Pea Family, has dense spiked clusters of blue flowers and leaves that are palmately divided into 5 to 9 leaflets.
